Two monks, a master and his young disciple, were traveling down a muddy road after a heavy rainstorm.

He was desperate to cross to secure a trade deal, but he was terrified of the rushing water, terrified of losing his wealth, and frozen by indecision. His anxiety had completely paralyzed him.
The young disciple, wanting to be kind, stepped forward. As they walked away, the young disciple whispered, “Master, you were so blunt, almost harsh! Why did you not treat him with gentle kindness?”
The Master replied: “The merchant didn’t need a friend to comfort his fear; he needed a guide to break his paralysis. To truly serve a person in danger, you must have the courage to say what must be said, and do what must be done, to get them across the river before they drown.”
